It’s My Story and I’m Sticking To It!

You’ve got to check out my sidebar. JuiceBoxJungle has a brand new widget that lets you, among other things, send an ecard to a friend right from this blog (click around and check it out). They also have a cool new sponsor, Paper Culture, a modern, eco-friendly premium stationary company that will actually address, message and mail your cards for free. AND, Paper Culture is offering 30% off to my readers  http://www.paperculture.com/save30now for a limited time (promo code SAVE30NOW). They’ve asked – and sponsored – me to talk about the most memorable event I’ve ever been to. Oh boy. Here goes:

You get to decide….fact or fiction!

When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we decided that since it was marriage number two for each of us we’d keep it simple. The thought of juggling two jobs, inviting everyone and making plans for a wedding was just something we didn’t want to deal with at that time in our lives. We loved our family and friends but stress was something we didn’t want added to our wedding. We opted to elope.

When discussing this with a friend she had the idea of picking a long weekend following our wedding and having a “really nice reception”. Well, that takes some planning to pull off as well and knowing we were facing a move with a few weeks, we weren’t so sure that was a wise idea. THEN she said, “oh but you can make it way more easy than you ever imagined!” I sat and listened to her toss out these ideas….

  • Use her large backyard and make it super casual
  • Make the theme “white trash” and shock the guest
  • Wedding cake in the shape of a “trailer”
  • Use trash cans filled with ice for coolers and drop in beer, water & soda
  • Forget the fancy finger food, plop out a tray of open cans of sardines, vienna sausages and a tub of pimento cheese with a few boxes of crackers
  • Set out some rolls of paper towels and buckets of parched peanuts
  • Hire a karoke DJ and have him show up in overalls
  • Hang her laundry on the porch railing
  • AND, to let folks know we were serious about showing up in cut off’s and overalls……

She suggested that we get small brown paper sacks and hand write the invitations with a crayon and seal with some duct tape. :)  The more we talked about it the more we howled with laughter. So my friend says to me, “this is how much fun your guests will have. Just imagine the pictures!” We laughed even louder and the tears rolled as we thought about people opening up their mail boxes to find our invitations written on a brown paper sack and the probability of the phone calls coming into confirm it was not a joke.

We skipped the entire hassle of a wedding. We in fact got married at the park by a JP at noon on our lunch hour. The reception? YOU decide. Fact or Fiction???? LOL :)
